Fewer than 7 percent of Lonmin workers reports for duty

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Fewer than 7 percent of Lonmin's 28,000-strong South African workforce reported for duty on Thursday, as the platinum producer held talks with warring unions aimed at cooling tensions and bringing people back to work.

The world's third-largest platinum producer has had its mining operations shut for almost three weeks because of a violent turf war between the established National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and militant Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) that has killed 44 people this month.

That total includes 34 striking workers killed at once in a hail of police bullets, stiffening the resolve of surviving comrades to hold out until their demands are met.

"We have a 6.6 percent average attendance across all shafts this morning," Lonmin said in a statement on Thursday.

The talks to end the impasse in the platinum mining city of Rustenburg northwest of Johannesburg resumed on Thursday after dragging into the night on Wednesday.

Gideon du Plessis, deputy secretary general of trade union Solidarity, said discussions are to secure "a return to work agreement - with the aim of getting workers back to work on Monday after most funerals have been concluded."

He said the grievances raised by the striking workers would then be dealt with and finally, a "peace accord" would be reached.

Solidarity represents skilled workers and its members have not been on strike but all unions are taking place in the talks.

The 3,000 strikers who have brought things to a standstill are mostly rock driller operators demanding a monthly wage of 12,500 rand ($1,500), which would be a hike of over 25 percent of what the company says it currently pays, excluding bonuses.

In Australia, South Africa's mines minister Susan Shabangu said on the sidelines of a mining conference in Perth that the violence was undermining investor confidence in Africa's largest economy, which sits on 80 percent of known platinum reserves.

"It is a cause for concern. The tragedy does impact on any potential investments. Any investor would like to invest in a stable environment, we've got to recognize that," she said.

Lonmin accounts for 12 percent of the global output of platinum, used in car catalytic converters and jewelry.

Lonmin has said it may issue new shares to shore up a balance sheet hit by lost output and revenue, and the prospect of further losses as the entire platinum sector struggles with soaring power and labor costs and poor demand.

FBI suspected Ray Bradbury of communist sympathies

(AP) ? The FBI gave Ray Bradbury a mixed review.

According to documents declassified recently through the Freedom of Information Act, the bureau investigated the "Fahrenheit 451" author in the 1950s and 1960s because of suspected communist sympathies.

One informant warned agents that Bradbury, who died June 5 at age 91, wrote stories that were "definitely slanted" against capitalism. The informant added that science fiction itself could so terrify readers that they would succumb to "incompetence bordering on hysteria" and would be helpless during a third world war.

The bureau noted Bradbury's opposition to Sen. Joe McCarthy and other anti-Communists and his support for civil rights. But it concluded that Bradbury had never been in the Communist Party and that interviewing him was unnecessary because he did not have "informant potential."

Parole board hears chilling details of Lennon shooting

New York State Dept. of Corrections

Mark David Chapman is seen in this May 15, 2012, photo from the New York State Department of Corrections.

By Jim Gold, NBC News

The killer of ex-Beatle John Lennon says he used hollow point bullets to shoot the singer ?because they were more deadly.?

Mark David Chapman retold chilling details of his Dec. 8, 1980, crime during a New York parole board hearing on Aug. 22. He was denied parole for a seventh time the next day and remains at Wende Correctional Facility in western New York. The parole department released transcripts of the hearing Wednesday.

Chapman said he was living in Hawaii when he decided to target Lennon ?because he was very famous.?

He said he also considered targeting television host Johnny Carson and actor George C. Scott.

But Lennon was more famous, Chapman said. He insisted he had no anger toward Lennon:??If he was less famous than three or four other people on the list, he would not have been shot.?

John Lennon is shown performing Aug. 30, 1972, at New York's Madison Square Garden.

Chapman said he bought the gun he used in Honolulu and needed only to show a driver?s license to get it. However, he said he?got the hollow-point bullets from an old friend in Atlanta who was a police officer.

?I made a phone call in New York and the fellow said, ?you?re not going to get any bullets out of me. It?s just not done here.??

He said he told his Atlanta friend he needed the bullets for protection.

?I didn?t tell him what I was going to do,? Chapman said.

When asked why he chose hollow-point, Chapman responded ?Because they were more deadly.?

Asked if he wanted to ?inflict death,? on Lennon, Chapman responded, ?Yes. Absolutely.?

Watch TODAY's morning news coverage from the day the legendary musician was assassinated outside his New York City apartment building.

Chapman said he had flown from Hawaii to New York twice to check out Lennon?s apartment building, called the Dakota.

He said on one trip, he saw the film ?Ordinary People,? and called his wife, who was in Hawaii, and told her of his deadly plan but that he decided not to go through with it.

The compulsion to kill grew again after he returned to Hawaii, so he flew back to New York without telling his wife he planned to kill Lennon, said Chapman, who was 25 at the time.

Chapman said that on the day he shot Lennon, he staked out the Dakota from before noon and talked to him early in the day.

?He was very kind to me? and signed an album while his wife, Yoko Ono, waited in a limousine, Chapman said.

?Very cordial and very decent man,? Chapman said.??? But I was so compelled to commit murder that nothing would have dragged me away from that building.?

Just before 11 p.m., Lennon and Ono arrived at the apartment building. Ono?got out of the car first, Chapman said, and went into the alcove of the Dakota as Lennon lingered at the car a moment.

?And then when Mr. Lennon passed me I turned, pulled out my weapon and shot him in the back,? Chapman said.

The record, he said,?shows him calling out ?Mr. Lennon,? but he told the parole board he didn?t say that.

?I just shot him,? he said.

Chapman fired five shots with a .38-caliber revolver, hitting Lennon four times in front of Ono and others.

There was a scream, and the Dakota doorman, Jose, grabbed Chapman?s pistol, the gunman told the parole board.

Chapman said he was carrying a copy of J.D. Salinger?s ?The Catcher in the Rye? when he shot Lennon. He claimed to identify with the main character, ?who seemed to be lost and troubled.?

While in prison, Chapman said, he has been in his cell writing letters, reading and thinking.

He also said he has been having?conjugal visits with his wife ?pretty steady? for 20 years. His wife lives in Hawaii, he said.

He also said he has a ?deep relationship with Christ? that started when he was in a Christian camp at age 16.

?So this is obviously very embarrassing for me now, having committed murder,? Chapman said.

If he were to be paroled, Chapman said, he would go to Medina, N.Y., about 50 miles northeast of Buffalo, where a minister whom his wife met offered to refurbish an apartment and give him two jobs on his farm.

Chapman said he had corresponded with the pastor but?met him just two days before the parole hearing.

The reason for the crime, according to Chapman: ?Attention, bottom line.?

He said he received the attention but now he feels it was an??absolutely ridiculously selfish act to take another human life so that I could be pumped up into, you know, something that I wasn?t to begin with.?

He also told a parole commissioner, ?Fame is ridiculous. It holds no value.?

?It was a very selfish act and I deeply regret it,? Chapman told the board. ?I?m sorry for my crime.?

Correction: Pet Goat-Tennessee story

EAST RIDGE, Tenn. (AP) ? In a story Aug. 29 about a pet goat violating East Ridge livestock ordinances, The Associated Press reported erroneously the owner surname. The owners are the Viar family, not Vlar.

A corrected version of the story is below:

Oreo the goat living outlaw's life in Tennessee

Officials say Tenn. city may grant exception for family ? or else Oreo the pet goat must go

EAST RIDGE, Tenn. (AP) ? Not wanting to be the people who got Jeff Viar's goat, city council members in a Tennessee city will consider an exemption for the animal.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press (http://bit.ly/QSm47l) reports the issue is whether a black and white pigmy goat named Oreo can remain in East Ridge as Viar's pet.

City Manager Tim Gobble says there's no question Oreo is cute. But he also says the city must either enforce its "no livestock" ordinance or find an alternative.

Jeff and Samantha Viar say they didn't know keeping Oreo was against the law when they got him for their children a year ago.

Mayor Brent Lambert is sympathetic. He has kids, too ? the human kind ? and says the city is willing to look at a narrow exception for Oreo.

College Students: Serve Us Real Food, Please

Over the next couple of weeks, students will once again fill America?s college and university campuses?and they?ll be hungry. The cost to feed them?

Five billion dollars.

But the health, social and environmental cost of most campus dining may be even higher than the monetary one, with the vast majority of that sum going to agribusinesses and junk food makers. What is needed, some say, is an influx of food to campuses that takes into account a concern for producers, consumers, communities, and the Earth.?

?The issue is so potent because when students arrive on campus, especially freshmen, you?re forced to eat their meal plan,? says David Schwartz, cofounder and campaign director of the Real Food Campaign, a nationwide movement that works with young people to transform the food system. ?We see it as a total right that students should have a say of what we put in our bodies.?

MORE: 15 Photos of the Most Amazing College Dorm You Have Ever Seen

The primary goal of the Real Food Campaign (which is a program of Boston-based The Food Project) is to get colleges and universities to shift $1 billion nationally?just 20 percent of the total spending?from industrial food systems to ?local/community-based, fair, ecologically sound and humane food sources??what it calls ?real food??by 2020.?

Students, organizers say, provide the fuel and passion for the movement. When school starts this fall, the campaign will have a presence on 363 campuses in 41 states. Student groups there work together to educate their dining service officials on the advantages of serving real food and ask them to commit in writing to transforming their purchasing practices. While just one school has signed the commitment thus far?Saint Mary?s College in Notre Dame, Ind.?there is great energy and passion among students to transform their campus food systems. Last winter, ?summits? in each of the campaign?s six regions drew 1,400 students.

Alexandra Villegas knew the state of California already requires colleges and universities to work toward procuring 20 percent "real food" by 2020, so she raised the standard on her campus. As a senior at the University of California Santa Cruz, Villegas successfully lobbied her dining director and administrators to commit to procuring 40 percent real food by 2020. The school's chancellor signed the commitment in February.

She also led an effort to start Farm Fridays, where each Friday a different dining hall would serve an all-local lunch to students. The 22-year-old, who graduated from UCSC in June, now begins a post organizing other student workers on campuses across California.

"I'm really excited to be working with the Real Food Campaign and hopefully see what happened on the UCSC campus happen on campuses all over the state," she says.

While many schools say they offer fresh, sustainable options to their students, Schwartz says too many dining departments engage in what he calls ?greenwashing??exaggerating their sustainability practices on their websites and in campus brochures.

So, what does a ?real food campus? look like?

It probably looks a lot like Sterling College. For one, the liberal arts college in Craftsbury Common, Vt., educates students in environmental stewardship and boasts of its strong programs in agriculture and food systems. Sterling doesn?t use a food-service operator; instead, in-house chefs work alongside students to prepare fresh, seasonal, local meals. There?s a farm on campus where a large portion of its food is grown. The rest comes from local producers.

The ?practice what you teach? food philosophy has taken root in many of Sterling?s students. In 2010, several undergraduate students turned some collective inspiration from a sustainable agriculture class into an idea to start their own CSA, which for a time served both fellow students and the local community.

OK, so most campuses aren?t going to get from Aramark-run dining halls to grow-your-own overnight. But the Real Food Campaign is asking schools to take baby steps toward fairer, more sustainable, more ?real? food options on campus.

What percentage of your campus?s food is ?real??

Twelve dead, 10 missing as typhoon pounds S. Korea

Twelve people were killed and 10 were missing after a strong typhoon pounded South Korea Tuesday, uprooting trees, sinking ships and cutting power to almost 200,000 homes.

By early evening Typhoon Bolaven -- the strongest to hit the South for almost a decade -- had moved to North Korea, which is still struggling to recover from deadly floods earlier this summer.

Hundreds of flights in the South were grounded, ferry services were suspended and schools in Seoul and several other areas were closed.

Bolaven left a trail of death and damage in southwestern and south-central regions of the country, although it was little felt in central parts of Seoul.

Off the southern island of Jeju, the storm drove two Chinese fishing ships aground early Tuesday, sparking a dramatic rescue operation.

Coastguards wearing wetsuits struggled through high waves and then used a line-launcher to fire ropes to one ship, a coastguard spokesman said. The other boat broke apart.

Rescuers saved 12 people while six swam ashore, but 10 crew members are still missing, the spokesman said. Five bodies were recovered.

In the southern county of Wanju, a 48-year-old man was killed by a shipping container flipped over by gale-force winds, the public administration ministry said.

An elderly woman was crushed to death when a church spire collapsed onto her house in the southwestern city of Gwangju, while another elderly woman was blown off the roof of her home in the western county of Seocheon.

A workman fell from the roof of a hospital in the southwestern port of Mokpo. At Imsil county in North Jeolla province, a 51-year-old man died while clearing toppled trees.

In Yeongkwang county west of Gwangju, a 72-year-old man suffered fatal head injuries when his house wall collapsed. At Buyeo city in South Chungcheong province, a woman aged 75 died after falling due to strong winds.

A 77,000-tonne bulk carrier broke in two off the southeastern port of Sacheon but no casualties were reported, the public administration ministry said.

The transport ministry said all 87 sea ferry services had been halted. A total of 247 flights -- 183 domestic and 64 international -- have been cancelled since Monday.

The typhoon -- packing winds of 144 kilometres (90 miles) per hour at one time -- brought heavy rain and strong winds to southern and western areas. It toppled street lights and signs, shattered windows, uprooted trees and tore off shop signs.

The National Emergency Management Agency said 197,751 homes in Jeju and the southwest and south-central regions lost power.

A total of 83 people, mostly in the southwest, were evacuated from their homes and taken to shelters. Some 21 homes were damaged.

The US and South Korean armed forces called a temporary halt to a large-scale joint military exercise that began last week.

After sweeping up the Yellow Sea to the west of South Korea, Bolaven made landfall in North Korea in the early evening.

The impoverished nation is already struggling to recover from a devastating summer drought, followed by floods which killed 169 people, left about 400 missing and made 212,000 people homeless, according to official figures.

Weather officials said Typhoon Tembin was also threatening the Korean peninsula, and was forecast to be some 200 kilometres west of Jeju early Friday.

?Marinating Hard Wooden Floors
Flooring is a very important part of every home. With no time for proper and through cleaning, to get rid of carpet and health issues and for easy maintenance most of us today go for tiles to cover the floors. Arctic sea ice shrinks to new low in satellite era

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? The extent of the sea ice covering the Arctic Ocean has shrunk. According to scientists from NASA and the NASA-supported National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) in Boulder, Colo., the amount is the smallest size ever observed in the three decades since consistent satellite observations of the polar cap began.

The extent of Arctic sea ice on Aug. 26, as measured by the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager on the U.S. Defense Meteorological Satellite Program spacecraft and analyzed by NASA and NSIDC scientists, was 1.58 million square miles (4.1 million square kilometers), or 27,000 square miles (70,000 square kilometers) below the Sept. 18, 2007, daily extent of 1.61 million square miles (4.17 million square kilometers).

The sea ice cap naturally grows during the cold Arctic winters and shrinks when temperatures climb in the spring and summer. But over the last three decades, satellites have observed a 13 percent decline per decade in the minimum summertime extent of the sea ice. The thickness of the sea ice cover also continues to decline.

"The persistent loss of perennial ice cover -- ice that survives the melt season -- led to this year's record summertime retreat," said Joey Comiso, senior research scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "Unlike 2007, temperatures were not unusually warm in the Arctic this summer."

The new record was reached before the end of the melt season in the Arctic, which usually takes place in mid- to late-September. Scientists expect to see an even larger loss of sea ice in the coming weeks.

"In 2007, it was actually much warmer," Comiso said. "We are losing the thick component of the ice cover. And if you lose the thick component of the ice cover, the ice in the summer becomes very vulnerable."

"By itself it's just a number, and occasionally records are going to get set," NSIDC research scientist Walt Meier said about the new record. "But in the context of what's happened in the last several years and throughout the satellite record, it's an indication that the Arctic sea ice cover is fundamentally changing."

Syria sectarian divide turns to fear and flight

BEIRUT (AP) ? Abu Qais, a Sunni Muslim in Syria's capital Damascus, says six members of his extended family have been killed by gunmen who belong to the minority Alawite sect of President Bashar Assad.

The gunmen who grabbed one of his distant cousins called up his family while they were torturing him "so they could hear his screams," said Abu Qais, an anti-Assad activist who spoke on condition his full name not be used for fear of reprisals.

Sectarian slayings between Syria's Sunni majority and the Alawite minority have been a brutal reality of Syria's 17-month-old conflict, and they have only accelerated as the country falls into outright civil war. Sunnis have largely backed the uprising against Assad's rule, while the Alawites ? members of an offshoot of Shiism ? have firmly stood behind the regime, where they fill the leadership ranks.

And as tit-for-tat killings have swelled, so has the segregation of the two communities as they flee each other. In Damascus and other cities, Sunnis and Alawites avoid venturing into each other's neighborhoods for fear of being snatched. Some Alawite districts in the capital are now ringed with checkpoints manned not only by security forces but also residents who have taken up arms to protect their homes.

Those in mixed neighborhoods flee their homes to move into safer enclaves dominated by their community ? whether in the same city or in another part of the country.

"Mutual threats in Damascus have succeeded in triggering migration," said Fateh Jamous, an Alawite activist from Latakia, the Mediterranean coastal city where many Alawites have fled. Latakia itself has so far represented a sort of tense neutral ground ? its population is about half Sunni, half Alawite. "That created a sort of balance of terror. So far, it has been generally peaceful," he said by telephone from Latakia.

The flight raises the grim possibility that Syria could go down the path of neighboring Iraq. There, violence in 2006 and 2007 effectively turned into a sort of sectarian cleansing, as Shiite and Sunni militias and insurgents targeted members of the rival community, killing thousands and sending hundreds of thousands fleeing their homes. To this day, Baghdad remains largely divided between wholly Shiite and wholly Sunni districts with few mixed areas remaining.

Syria has not yet reached that scale. But the prospect of it breaking up along religious or ethnic lines is no longer a remote possibility in a conflict that activists estimate has killed 20,000 people as Assad's regime tries to crush rebels determined to topple him. Kurds in the northeast have begun rumbling with talk of self-rule. Alawites have been pulling back into their ancestral heartland, along the Mediterranean coast and in the nearby mountains.

Some anti-regime activists believe that two reported massacres of Sunnis earlier this year, in the towns of Houla in May and Qubeir in June, aimed to drive Sunnis out of areas near main routes to the coast to ensure control of the Alawite enclave.

But the tearing apart of the two communities has been taking place on a smaller but increasing scale, neighborhood by neighborhood and city by city.

Their coexistence has always been uneasy. Sunnis make up the vast majority of Syria's 23 million people, and Alawites about 15 percent of the population. For the past 40 years, the Assad family's regime has enforced a secular ideology that zealously marketed the notion of equality among the nation's many religious and ethnic groups.

But at the same time, it was promoting the Alawite community to which the Assad family belongs.

Alawites, who had traditionally been among the poorest in Syria, were brought in by the Assads to fill the regime's leadership, elevating them into an elite class that had historically been Sunni. Top positions in the army, police and security agencies were given to Alawite men, while their women typically worked in the government. Significantly, inter-marriages between Sunnis and Alawites have been rare, though Assad himself is married to a British-raised Sunni who hails from the central city of Homs.

In Damascus' mostly Sunni neighborhood of Mazzeh, a resident named Moaz nostalgically remembers the woods that once stood on a hill close to his home. Then, years ago, the trees were cut down, and apartment blocs went up to house Alawites taking positions in the military and government. Their area, built within the Mazzeh area to promote an image of integration, became known as Mazzeh-86.

"Our relation with them was like a cold peace, 'We mind our own business and you mind yours'," recalled Moaz, a 28-year-old anti-Assad activist. He spoke on condition his full name not be used to protect himself and his family from reprisals.

Now the two areas are virtually at war. Alawites from Mazzeh-86 frequently help put down protests by Sunnis in the larger district, beating up protesters outside mosques alongside security forces. Checkpoints divide the two areas. In Sunni Mazzeh, there have been numerous slayings of those believed to be informers for the government, both Alawites and Sunnis, said Moaz.

"People with coastal accents (Alawites) are instantly recognized. They are arrogant and sure of themselves," he said.

Damascus had been largely unaffected by the fighting raging elsewhere in the country, until last month when rebels staged a major offensive in the city of 1.7 million people, sparking a heavy regime counter-attack. As the fighting raged, sectarian violence increased. So far, it has been concentrated in poor or lower middle-class neighborhoods of the capital, while most upscale districts remain peaceful, residents and activists say.

Alawites, who by some estimates make up 30 percent of Damascus' residents, have fled neighborhoods where they make up a small minority, finding relative security elsewhere where Alawite numbers are higher, residents and activists say. Many Alawite men send their families to their home villages near the coast.

"Most Alawites are in this with the view that it is a life or death war for them," said another Damascus resident by Skype. Identifying himself only as a "native Syrian" ? refusing to give his sectarian allegiance ? he said checkpoints outside Alawite neighborhoods have been beefed up in recent weeks, with up to 15 or 20 heavily armed security men and residents staffing them.

"The Alawites think that they would be subjected to genocide if Assad goes," he said.

Sectarian violence has been rampant in Homs, a major center of the revolt that was subjected to a devastating government siege earlier this year. Residents and activists say its population has been effectively divided into two sections, with Sunnis in one side and Alawites and Christians in the other.

Mohammed Saleh, a Homs resident and a rare Alawite who actively works with the opposition, says several months ago two Sunni men showed up at his apartment and ordered him to pack up and leave in 10 days.

"I made calls. I spoke to many of my friends and contacts in Homs and elsewhere. I was able to stay," Saleh, reached by telephone in Homs, said. But Saleh's son, who had been living with him, left with his wife and kids to an Alawite part of the city.

"I am never leaving," said Saleh, a trained chemist now making a living selling solar energy systems for household use, in huge demand because of lengthy power cuts. His work takes him across the entire city, but he never travels alone. "I make a point of taking with me someone from the neighborhood I am going to. Even if it is an Alawite district, I still go with a resident from there."

Some of Saleh's closest friends and neighbors have not been so lucky.

"In December and January alone, I lost a friend who was a Sunni doctor, another who was a Shiite engineer and a third one who was an Alawite army officer," said Saleh.

American states back Ecuador over Assange

The Organization of American States declared "solidarity and support" for Ecuador in its dispute with Britain over granting asylum to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

The meeting of the Americas bloc was convened at Ecuador's request to consider a resolution rejecting any attempt to put at risk the "inviolability" of its embassy in London, where Assange is holed up.

In the resolution, foreign ministers and representatives of the 34-member regional body rejected "any attempt that might put at risk the inviolability of the premises of diplomatic missions."

The text, adopted by consensus after five hours of arduous negotiations in Washington, also expressed "solidarity and support for the government of the Republic of Ecuador."

It urged Ecuador and Britain to "continue to engage in dialogue in order to settle their current differences in accordance with international law, taking into account the statements made recently by authorities of both governments."

Reservations about the resolution were expressed in footnotes by the United States and Canada, OAS members who are also firm British allies.

The diplomatic confrontation over Assange, who has been staying at the Ecuadoran mission since June 19, reached a new pitch last week after Quito announced it was granting the 41-year-old Australian activist asylum.

Correa expressed relief at receiving assurances from London on Thursday that ruled out the possibility of British authorities forcibly entering his country's embassy.

"While it is clear that there was a threat, we understand this message as a retraction of that threat, which we welcome with joy," Correa said in an address broadcast on national television and radio.

Britain's permanent observer to the OAS, Philip Barton, echoed London's statement that it never threatened to enter the Ecuadoran embassy.

"At no time did the UK make any threat against the embassy of Ecuador," he said, calling for a resumption of dialogue.

"We invite the government of Ecuador to resume as early as possible the constructive discussion we've held on this matter to date."

Speaking to the British newspaper The Guardian, Correa insisted that "the window of dialogue has never been closed."

"But we are never going to give up our principles, nor the human rights of Mr Assange," he added.

"As a consequence, we'll continue to demand what we've been demanding from the beginning: if Mr Assange goes to Sweden to face Swedish justice, as is his will and as is our will, he should receive a guarantee that he will not be extradited to a third country."

Correa repeated his demand that London grant Assange "safe passage" to exit the embassy.

Assange took refuge there to escape extradition to Sweden, where he is sought for questioning about sex assault allegations.

He claims that if extradited to Sweden, he would be handed over to the United States, where he fears prosecution over WikiLeaks' release of a vast cache of confidential US government files.

Ecuador is demanding a "public apology" from Britain for allegedly threatening to enter the Ecuadoran embassy in London to arrest Assange.

During the OAS debate, Ecuadoran Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino condemned Britain for what he called the "assault on our sovereignty."

While Britain has said it will not go into the embassy to arrest Assange, it has refused to grant the Australian national safe conduct out of the country.

Parenting Advice (language warning) | Step Talk

OK, for those of you who have read my blogs, you know that my DH's grandmother83 lives with us. Not my decision. I am married to him, I signed up for SM world with SS5, and apparently that also means having DH's entire family force GM on us.

GM insists on making comments about DH's parenting of SS5. This irks my nerves to no end. The second I have a baby and she tries to give me advice, she is in for a world of fucking hurt.

I believe that you lose your right to give any parently advice what-so-ever when you kick your 16 year old grandson and legally adopted son (aka DH) out of the house when he is 16 for no reason. The bitch made him homeless at 16 for reasons no body knows, and thinks that she has the right to tell DH how to parent. We have SS5 eowe. I make a pitcher of kool aid on Friday and that is what SS will drink when he is hear, unless he specifically asks for something else. If SS just asks for a drink, have some kool aid. Every Sunday morning when we are having breakfast(and I cook a big sunday breakfast with pancakes made from scratch, eggs, and sausage) this woman feels the need to make some comments as to why don't we give SS milk.

DH gets pissed every time. SS has a glass of kool aid in front of him. I know it isn't the most nutritious thing in the world, but we are on a tight budget and only having him EOWE, it won't kill him. DH throws down his utensils, storms off to the kitchen making comments about "well, I guess I will stop eating my breakfast because SS needs some milk. Nevermind that he has a drink in front of him." Well, GM starts saying more things, you should give him orange juice (we don't have any, she sees my Sunny D which I take to work with me every morning. That is mine, don't offer it to anyone, I will become mega bitch if I run out before the week is over. This is due to the fact that my brother would have friends over when we were teenagers and they would wipe out my supply. I am now very territorial with my food.) DH comes out of the kitchen with a glass of milk for SS and a glass of my sunny D. Both are still sitting on the table, along with SS's glass of kool aid. Why, because SS didn't want any of it. GM just had to be a pain in the ass, so DH did this to make her shut up.

Did this make her shut up... NO! it made her bitch even more because now SS has too much to drink. SS would have had too much to drink with just one of the two things that DH brought out... why? Because you dumbass, HE ALREADY HAD A DRINK! ugh... I hate my life sometimes. I have been trying to cope with this, as best as I can. I am thankful I will be taking classes this semester, so I will get an extra few hours out of the house.

Thank you for letting me vent. I really appreciate it. I can't say anything to DH because it just pisses him off that I can't stand GM. When in reality, neither can he.

Obama says he wants to preserve Medicare

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama says the Medicare program is about keeping promises to millions of seniors who have put in a lifetime of hard work.

Obama is using Saturday's radio and Internet address to discuss a surging campaign issue. He says his goal is to strengthen Medicare and preserve the program for future generations.

Obama makes no mention of Republican rival Mitt Romney but says Republicans in Congress would turn Medicare into a voucher program that wouldn't keep up with costs. The GOP ticket has accused Obama of cutting more than $700 billion from Medicare to pay for his health care law.

In the Republican address, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky says the nation is being hurt by "the looting of the Treasury and 20 years of deficit spending."

Senior Care in Beverly MA: Cost of Caregiving for Elderly Parents

?

Almost 10 million adult children over the age of 50 are now caring for their aging parents. This number has tripled over the past 15 years. The demand will continue to increase as baby boomers age.

Although the percentage of women in the work force has also increased dramatically, particularly in women over the age of 55, the mean household income has leveled off. The economic burden of caring for elderly family members continues to increase.

Women tend to function more as a basic caregiver, while sons tend to provide more financial support. The total amount of lost wages, pensions and Social Security for these adult children is close to $3 trillion dollars nationally.Senior Care Beverly MA

Women tend to leave the labor force earlier, so the total individual lost wages due to caregiving responsibilities equals $142,693, with an estimate of $50,000 loss on their pension. Coupled with the loss of Social Security, the lost wages for a woman totals $324,044.

The total amount of wages lost for men equals $89,107. Add Social Security and their pension and the total for men equals $283,716. The long term financial impact for those that leave their jobs early can jeopardize their financial security. There may be less money available to help children with college, weddings or even owning their own homes.

Senior care duties vary greatly depending on the quality of care necessary. Some people need basic care, which means meeting the activities of daily living, such as bathing or dressing. This type of care is considered more intense than activities like grocery shopping or handling the finances.

When adult children must provide the additional support of errands, chores and managing the finances, time that adult has for their own leisure and personal time diminishes. Therefore, chronic illness and depression are more common. There may be less time available to spend with the grandchildren also.

An adult child caregiver over 50 years of age is more prone to have fair to poor health than an adult child who is not a caregiver. Several studies have discovered that stress, time away from friends and family, lost time at work, increased medication use, overindulgence in alcohol or prescription drugs, coronary artery disease and depression are negative impacts connected to family caregiving.

The decision to quit a job, drop back to part time or take a lower paying job for flexibility needs serious consideration. In addition, family caregivers should be careful to maintain their own health through regular check-ups and preventative services.

Ease the burden of senior care by hiring a reputable home care agency to help with all of your aging loved one?s needs.

Whatmore confident of good show against Australia

Pakistan's head coach Dav Whatmore was confident his team will have upper hand in the limited over series against Australia, who will miss some key players due to injuries and retirement.

The 58-year-old former Australian batsman also believed familiar conditions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which has become Pakistan's base as security concerns stop them from hosting matches at home -- also give his side edge.

Australia will miss all-rounder Shane Watson through injury and spearhead Brett Lee, who retired last month after being plagued by injuries.

The four-time world champions also slipped to fourth in the on-day rankings earlier this month after a period of three years following their 4-0 loss in England.

The three-match one-day series starts in Sharjah on August 28. The other two matches will be played in Abu Dhabi (August 31) and Sharjah (September 3). The three Twenty20 internationals will be played in Dubai September on 5, 7 and 10.

Whatmore was confident his team will put up a better show.

"Australia have had a retirement or two and an injury so I suppose we can have edge to start with," Whatmore told reporters on team's arrival here on Saturday.

Whatmore, who played seven Test and one limited over international for Australia in late 1970s, warned Australia can come back strongly as well.

"It could be they will try even harder after they lost pretty badly to England but the conditions in UAE are more known to the Pakistan team so from that point of view we hold a bit of an edge," said Whatmore.

Pakistan have been forced to play their home series in UAE since terrorist attacks on the Sri Lankan team suspended all international cricket in the country which prompted foreign teams to refuse tours to the troubled country.

Whatmore believed Pakistan can improve after winning the Asia Cup in March and despite losing both Tests and one-dayers on their tour of Sri Lanka.

"The Asia Cup was good so really it hasn't been as bad as some people may think. I honestly thought we were one ODI victory away from winning the series but otherwise it was a very good tour of Sri Lanka," said Whatmore.

"From positions of strength we managed to snatch defeat and hand the game over," said Whatmore of the 3-1 defeat in the five-match one-day series in Sri Lanka, with one match abandoned due to rain.

"The talent is definitely there, we just need to be a little bit stronger and win the mental battle a bit more and the team will be very competitive and consistent. We're working on those sorts of things."

Whatmore believed Pakistan can do well in the World Twenty20 to be held in Sri Lanka in September-October.

"Pakistan have done impressively well in previous World Twenty20s so the pressure is on for us this time, particularly me. It's a challenge but I've always looked forward to these sorts of challenges."

Liberty Ross: Spotted! Without a Wedding Ring!

In her latest blog entry, Liberty Ross hinted at a split from husband Rupert Sanders.

In her most recent public appearance, meanwhile, the model did a lot more than merely hint: she was spotted without a wedding ring!

For the first time since the affair between Sanders and Kristen Sanders became public, Ross showed up at a public event, posing on the red carpet of the Lawless premiere in Los Angeles last night. Take a close look at her left hand, folks. It's barren of jewelery, isn't it?
