Tufts Health Plan presented a $10,000 donation to The Family Van on race day

Watertown, MA- On Monday, October 8th, 2012 more than 8,000 women of all ages gathered with their friends and families on the corner of Beacon and Charles Streets in Boston for the start of the 36th Annual Tufts Health Plan 10k for Women. A tradition for generations of women, the race inspires women of all fitness levels to achieve health and wellness goals.

Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women participants included elite athletes, recreational runners and walkers. For the 18th year, USA Track & Field selected the Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women as the USA Women's 10K Championship. Hellen Jemutai, of Kenya, took 1st place overall in 32 minutes and 30 seconds, after placing 3rd in the B.A.A. half-marathon the day before. Coming in 2nd in the overall race, Chelsea Reilly of California, took home gold for the national title of the USA Women's 10K Champion with a time of 32 minutes and 41 seconds. The race was Chelsea's first 10k ever. Tara Erdmann, of Arizona, took home a silver medal, completing the 10-K in 32 minutes and 45 seconds. Neely Spence of Pennsylvania took bronze with a time of 32 minutes and 51 seconds.

One of the largest all-women's 10K events in the United States, the Tufts Health Plan 10K attracted women of all athletic abilities who participated for reasons as varied as the women who are expected to run. Founded by Conventures, Inc. in 1977, the race is a beloved tradition is held annually on Columbus Day.

In conjunction with the race, Tufts Health Plan made a $10,000 cash grant to The Family Van, which provides compassionate curbside cares in urban neighborhoods through its mobile clinics. The Family Van supports preventing screening, testing, and education for thousands of people each year.

"All of the race participants serve as a role model for women of all ages by showing that it is possible, given all of the challenges in our lives, that you can make a conscious choice to prioritize your health," said Lois Cornell, general counsel and senior vice president for human resources at Tufts Health Plan. "Tufts Health Plan takes great pride playing a leading role in this 10K, which has become a tradition in women's lives through generations and a symbol of their commitment to better health."

In addition to the race, there were a variety of activities focused on supporting health and wellness that took place on the Boston Common throughout the day. At the Health & Fitness Pavilion, fitness clothing and accessories were on display as well as samples of healthy foods, complimentary sports massages, health screenings, fitness demonstrations, and many other tools used to encourage people to take part in an active and healthy lifestyle.
