Oklahoma Tornado Relief Efforts: How to Help the ... - Shape

After a tornado ripped through the outskirts of Oklahoma City, killing 24 people and leveling entire neighborhoods in Moore, OK, many people are wondering how they can help Moore residents begin to rebuild their lives. If you'd like to lend a hand in some way, we've compiled a list of the best resources. Obviously, this isn't an exhaustive list. Please feel free to add your own in the comments below!

1. Text to donate to the American Red Cross. True to Red Cross form, you can text "redcross" to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross disaster relief fund (you can also donate online).

2. Don't forget about the furry friends. Many family pets and animals were severely impacted by the tornado as well. If you'd like to help out the four-legged residents of Moore, you can donate to the Central Oklahoma Humane Society's disaster relief fund which will go toward medical equipment, cleaning supplies, and food for both pets and volunteers. The American Quarter Horse Association is also collecting donations for victims of the tornado.

3. Donate blood. The American Red Cross suggests donating at your local hospital or blood bank. Anybody in good health and over the age of 16 can donate. O- blood is most needed.

4. Drop off non-perishable items. If you'd prefer not to donate cash and you're in the area, you can check out a list of non-perishable items that are needed. Currently on the list are baby formula, diapers, gloves, blankets, flashlights, and batteries. Goodwill has set up several distribution sites and so have a few local Oklahoma hospitals. Grady Memorial Hospital is one in particular that will be accepting items through Friday of this week.

5. Remember sometimes the best thing you can do is stay out of the way. Volunteers are being discouraged from traveling to Moore and other affected areas while the search and recovery mission wraps up. Most charities are instead requesting cash donations to offset any logistical issues and transportation costs.
